I’ll start by saying, we’re all okay!
This morning around 4:40 am, we had an earthquake that registered 5.2 on the Richter Scale. I had just woken up right before it started because I was really hot (it was 75 degrees here yesterday & in the 60s overnight). I’ve also been fighting a fever since Tuesday, so I reached for the thermometer on my nightstand & the bed started swaying. For some reason, my first thought was that it was the cat under the bed. Then the immediate next thought was that it was wind and a thunderstorm. It just lasted too long to be thunder though. I got out of bed and all the doors upstairs were rattling. Neil came up (he’s been sleeping on the couch since I’ve been sick). He thought the front porch finally gave way. We both listened for the boys (neither one of them woke up) and we went downstairs to turn on the news. Sure enough, it was an earthquake. At first they were saying it was 5.4, then it was downgraded a little while later to 5.2. We felt a couple of aftershocks later on (most of those were registering between 2.2 and 2.5). About an hour ago (10:15 am), we had another aftershock that was 4.6. Now they are all centered about 100 miles or so away in Bellmont or Mount Carmel, IL (which is on the border of IL and IN)…about 50 or so miles away from Mount Vernon, IL.
We’ll keep you updated!

I know that earthquakes can be devastating, but so far, I don’t think there have been any reports of injury and only minor damage, so I hopeI can say this without offending anyone, but all I could think of when I realized it was an earthquake, and it was over, was that California Dairy commercial where the cows are experiencing an earthquake and say they just don’t last as long long enough!
I haven’t heard from your dad, yet – he likely slept through it!

It was the most unsettling — an in a strange way, thrilling — experience… what’s Calif. got that we don’t … bring it on!
Love you all!
